Every September during Golden Onion Days we run our little soap box derby. This event is so much fun that we feel kinda' sorry for any towns
that don't have one.
So . . . why not? Every town in the county has a community festival during the summer. Why not run a soap box derby so the families
in their town can have as much fun as we do?
Here's kind of how the schedule might shake out:
Springville | Art City Days | First of June |
|
Orem | Family Summer Fest | Middle of June |
|
Pleasant Grove | Strawberry Days | Middle of June |
|
Provo | Freedom Festival | Fourth of July |
|
American Fork | Steel Days | Week after July 4th |
|
Spanish Fork | Fiesta Days | Week of July 24th |
|
Santaquin | Orchard Days | End of July |
|
Salem | Salem Days | First week of August |
|
Utah County | Utah County Fair | Middle of August |
|
Payson | Onion Days | Labor Day |
Every one of those races is going to have some winners. Wouldn't it be cool if we could have them all meet at a big
championship race at the end of the year?
If only we had some big event that happened about the middle of September . . .
Hey! Wait a minute. Doesn't the Utah State Fair happen right about then?
What if we had a great big championship race at the Utah State Fair between all the racers from all over the valley?
I think that would be a great idea (I'm glad you thought of it)!
In addition to the festivals I mentioned above you've got your . . .
Lehi Roundup
Alpine Days
Mapleton Pioneer Days
Pony Express Days
Saratoga Splash
Genola Town
Cedar Hills Family Festival
Lindon Days
Highland Fling
Swiss Days in Midland
I'm not leaving you guys out; was just putting together a sample schedule. We hope everybody holds a race. And we hope that
everyone that does might be welcome to the idea of racers from other communities joining in. That way these guys that go to the
effort of building a car get to race it more than once a year.
Spanish Fork and American Fork have done a race. Orem has considered it. Daybreak does one every year. Maybe Salem could get back on board.
The people there love it; we just have to convince the City. If we can get four or five cities to have races in the next couple of years,
I think this deal can take off. Maybe someday we can be doing the State Fair thing.
So think about it, then drop me a line. Fleany 'at' gmail.com. I want to help. I'm not going to do your work for you--I've got my
hands full. So your first step is to contact me to pitch it to the committee or City Council and then assign someone to take it from there. That person
puts together a small committee to organize the race. Then I can provide equipment and support and help you run it. I've got ramp and timers an other stuff
you can use and ideas and I have experience. I'd love to see you to put on a successful race.
Seriously, let's get this done.
