Gov. Ryan cleared death row? I'm not falling for it.
1/11/03

According to published reports, Governor George Ryan of Illinois commuted the death sentence of 167 of the most despicable human beings in the whole state.

I'm going to disappoint those who are waiting for me to snatch this bait. I'm not going to howl and carry on and state fact after fact about why this is such a terrible thing. I'm not going to paint pictures about the unspeakable slap this is to the face of humanity.

You want to wrinkle your brow and get a very wise yet sad and pensive look on your face and ask "Yes, but who is going to make the decision about whethere those people live or die?" Then you want me think about the sickening things these people have done and look at my kids and realize they are sharing a planet with those monsters then you want me to jump up and wave my hand in the air and yell "Me! Me! Oh, please, pick me, please can I do it? Please, pick me!" I don't know why, but you get a real kick out of that.

But I'm not going to do that. You know why? 'Cause I'm not falling for it.

I'm trying to teach you people, you have to be subtle to pull off something like this. See, I might have risen to the bait if you told me he'd commuted 5 sentences, maybe even 10. But when you just pull out all the stops and right off the bat say he's forgiven 167 scum buckets responsible for the ruination of hundreds and hundreds of lives, I'm not falling for it.

Better luck next time.
